Welcome Address by Group Managing Director, Access Bank PLC Dr. Herbert Wigwe

It is my pleasure to welcome you all to the 2020 edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon hosted by His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Access Bank for the fifth consecutive is extremely proud to be the Headline Sponsor of the Lagos City Marathon, which has gotten bigger year-on-year. A testament to this fact is the confirmation of our recent award of the IAAF Silver Label for road races. This year, we are hoping to get the Gold Label, as today’s event promises to be a world-class outing that highlights the beauty of our ever-vibrant megacity.

Over 50,000 runners participated in 2016 at maiden edition of the Marathon. As at last year, Lagos witnessed over 120,000 people participating in the Marathon. Today, as usual, the streets of Lagos will be graced by even more participants, with millions of observers and enthusiasts from several countries across the globe.

An exceptional athlete will emerge today to receive the highly coveted trophy in addition to the $50,000 prize money for both Male and Female categories, while the second and third place winners will go home with $40,000 and $30,000 respectively. In what has become a tradition, the first 20 Nigerian winners will receive cash prizes with the 1st position getting N3,000,000 while the second and third positions will receive N2,000,000 and N1,000,000.00 respectively. For the 10km fun race, the 1st position will receive the grand prize of a brand new car, while the 2nd and 3rd get N1,000,000 and N750,000 respectively.
