Nigeria's most innovative financial company, Access Bank Plc  has applauded all teams that competed in the first ever Beach Polo Tournament, held at Event Centre of the Eko Atlantic City in Lagos over the weekend with Lagos Polo emerging winner.  The history event saw Lagos Polo team coming from behind to beat Power Horse 5-4 in a closely fought  final to emerge champions.

Executive Director, Commercial Banking Access Bank Plc, Roosevelt Ogbonna, who hailed the players for their sportsmanship, thumps up the winners, the runners up and all the players for their awesome display of skills and robust competitions throughout the prestigious event which is the first of its kind in the continent.

It was a great tournament with a fantastic show of sportsmanship from all the teams. There just had to be one winner and clearly the better team won. I applaud the skills displayed by the players, it justifies the months of hard work and dedication they put into their training sessions. As a business, we are proud of them” observed Ogbonna who led the Access Bank delegation to the grand finale.

Apart from being a major stake holder in the promotion of polo for over eight years now, we also decided to partner the organizers of the event from the inaugural edition of this prestigious event as part of our sports development initiatives”, he added.

Executive Director Personal Banking Access Bank Plc, Victor Etuokwu who joined Ogbonna on the podium to present the event’s biggest prize, the Access Bank Cup noted that the bank remains the sole sponsor of the biggest polo tournament in the continent, the Access Bank UNICEF Charity Shield Polo Tournament.

Etuokwo added that Access Bank is involved in a number of events as part of our corporate social responsibility, as a way of giving back to the society while encouraging sporting activities in Nigeria.

The colourful closing ceremony was preceded by  a subsidiary final and the winner–takes-all Access Bank Cup  final that pitted two best performing teams that came through their streams undefeated.

The Access bank Cup final match of the prestigious Beach polo tournament was a stimulating game which ended with a 5-4 victory for the Lagos Polo team against Power Horse side who paid dearly for underrating the resolves of their opponents, after taking the lead from the first minute of the tense encounter.

"We are absolutely thrilled, things didn't go our way in the opening chukka, but we surely rallied back against Power Horse. It was a massive performance by all our players and I couldn't be more proud that we are the kings of the first ever beach polo tournament in Nigeria”, enthused Captain of the winning Lagos Polo team, Habeeb Fashinro.

It's tough to explain how Lagos Polo sneaked from behind to snatch the title.  “I am not really pleased with the result. We felt like we can keep the tempo, which you have to do when you’re in a tournament like this. It was their day so congrats Lagos Polo”, Power Horse skipper, Musty Fashinro, mourned.

Earlier, Caverton team had thrashed the ambitious Veuve Cliquot 5-0 in the subsidiary, to emerge second runners-up and proud winners of the Eko Pearl Cup. Baba Dangote was adjudged the MVP in the Eko Pearl Cup final, while Abdulrahaman Mohammed smiled hope with the Access Bank Cup MVP award.
