SUSTAINABILITY CORNER Champion Spotlight
Chibueze Dunphy Ewuzie ( @arcdunphy )
Team Member, XclusivePlus Proposition
Hello, I am Chibueze Dunphy design, or furniture design, (they
happen to be the most recognizable expressions of design within Africa). While addressing topical issues stunting Africa's social-cultural and economic growth, by shedding light on the ways design can be used as a tool to proffer solutions to these problems.
Now more than ever, is the time for an initiative like this because the curriculum in most architecture design programs across Nigeria, has grown stale over the past decade or more. This has come under intense criticism by students and industry practitioners alike, due to access through globalization to information technology and current practices in other parts of the world.
Service to humanity fuels my passion for sustainability. Being conscious of the decisions we make today so that they do not impede the growth and well-being of future generations is what sustainability is all about. It requires strategic effort to execute due to the huge developmental challenges Nigeria and indeed Africa currently face.
I will continue to contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals through my affiliation with organizations such as Young African Leaders Initiative, where I serve as the Deputy Coordinator, Lagos Chapter; by collaborating with other organizations to create sustainable change for our society.

This informed my decision to help other students and young professionals make sense of the architecture industry. Clarity in this field is critical to the development of our country and the continent because we need highly skilled professionals who will lead the charge for positive change.
To solve this problem of poorly trained professionals, ill-prepared for the job market, I set up a free design training boot camp called DesignLab by Adire with a partner, through which students are taught advanced digital tools and soft skills that can aid their transition into the workplace.
Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on physical gatherings, we pivoted to a model that is equally effective and far-reaching by setting up a podcast-“The Africa Design Radio”. It carries the same message to beneficiaries in a cost-effective manner, unhindered by distance or geographic location.
The Africa Design Radio aims to fill a knowledge gap in the design industry not limited to architecture, interior
