SUSTAINABILITY CORNER Realizing the SDGs: Ensuring
Inclusiveness for All
Optimizing the health and well-being of people with disabilities is essential to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Everyone's health and well-being depends on an adequate standard of living, decently paid work and participation in education and social and community life but these are areas of life in which people with disabilities are particularly disadvantaged. Cerebral palsy, a common cause of childhood disability occurs in 1.5 to 2.5 per 1,000 live births. The prevalence is significantly higher in infants born prematurely than infants born at term. The risk of developing cerebral palsy increases with declining gestational age, with infants born at less than 28 weeks gestational age being most at risk. The prevalence is also higher in low birth weight infants.
To provide support towards this cause, the Global Market Group of the Bank embarked on a project focused on creating awareness around cerebral palsy. The Group partnered with the Cerebral Palsy Center, a not-for-profit organization involved in the management and care of children with cerebral palsy in Nigeria.
The Group embarked on an awareness walk to share informative and educative material about the condition. In addition, an awareness program tagged 'Hope
for Cerebral Palsy' was organised to educate people on the causes, symptoms and treatment of cerebral palsy.
Furthermore, the Group donated towards the commencement of the center, equipping the new
facility as well as hiring new caregivers. Through this partnership, 35 children have been impacted under the care of the Cerebral Palsy Center whilst employees within the Group have committed over 200 hours in the delivery of this project.
